To Kill A Mockingbird Courage

Based on your focus point notes (or the poster), explain (in paragraph form) one of the different types of courage that exist in the world and how it has been shown in TKAM.  You need specific quotes from the novel to use while proving your point.  This should be at least a paragraph in length.

I’d suggest the first paragraph should be explaining the type of courage in the world and the second should be that type in the book.

  1. Moral courage is the courage to do what's right, no matter what people will think of it An example of moral courage would be returning someone's money you found on the ground instead of just keeping it for yourself. Even though you might want to keep the money you just found, you should return it because that's the right thing to do.
You can also find moral courage by looking at Atticus in To Kill A Mockingbird. Atticus defends Tom Robinson even though he knows the entire town will think less of him just because he's defending a person of color. "I'm simply defending a Negro- his name's Tom Robinson....Scout, you aren't old enough to understand some things yet, but there's been some high talk around town to the effect that I shouldn't do much about defending this man." Atticus is fully aware that Maycomb's people won't like him defending Tom. He wants to do what's right in his mind and defend him.

    1. We both used the same topic of moral courage! I really liked the quote you used because it shows that Atticus is well aware of what people are going to say and still wants to defend Tom. This proves that he's showing moral and not stupid or naive courage.

  2. The type of courage I chose to focus on is moral courage, which to me is basically the same thing as doing the right thing no matter what. In the real world one example of moral courage is people who interfere with a bullying and standing up for those being bullied. Some people refuse to do this because they don't want to get picked on themselves or their friends are the ones doing the bullying. Which is why it takes moral courage to step up against bullies.
Many kinds of courage are shown in To Kill a Mockingbird, including moral courage. One way I see moral courage in the book is how Atticus decides to defend Tom even though he know it will make the town upset with him and his family. When Scout asks why he is defending Tom Atticus says, "If I didn't I couldn't hold my head up in this town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature, or even tell you and Jem no to do something." This shows that is Atticus didn't stick to his morals that would make him a bad lawyer, father, and person in general.

    1. We used the same type of courage but a different real world example. Mine was giving someone's money back and Rhiana's was standing up for someone being bullied. We did both use the same example in To Kill A Mockingbird but we didn't use the same textual evidence.

    2. I chose a different type of courage as you but you did a great job explaining moral courage! I understood everything you tried to explain and connect it with and I think that your paragraph does not need any improving. You followed TIQA format perfectly!

  3. Immature Courage- courage where you think that its brave and courageous but really its immature and stupid. In To Kill A Mockingbird an example of immature courage is when Jem goes to touch Boo Radley's house. He thinks its brave but really its just touching a house and its stupid.
In the real world today an example of immature courage would be kids standing up on the bus thinking they're cool. They're not, its just stupid when they stand up and act like they're cool.

    1. Good definition. I think you should have another example and quote. Also maybe use the word immature instead of the word stupid.Maybe explain the quote more in depth.

    2. Great input but maybe you could put the quote in quote form

  4. A type of courage that exists in the world is childish courage. Many people show this form by dong a childish thing such as pranking others. The prank itself took courage to pull off but it is a childish thing to do overall.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is a big aspect. Many different types of courage, including childish courage, are show throughout the book. An example would be when Dill dares Jem to touch the Radley’s house. “Jem threw open the gate and sped to the side of the house, slapped it with his palm and ran back past us, not waiting to see if his foray was successful. Dill and I followed on his heels. Safely on our porch, panting and out of breath, we looked back.” Jem had courage to touch the house after all of the different stories about the Radley’s, but it was childish. He had gotten dared to do it and it was courage that didn’t help anyone or himself.

    1. We used two different types of courage, mine was moral. I like your first example because I never thought about how pulling a prank off takes courage even if it is childish.

    2. Good example in the beginning! You explained the quote really well. It was really good maybe just add another example from the book.

  5. Childish/immature courage-

Immature courage is shown a few times in TKAM. Immature courage to me is when you do something without thinking but it’s still courageous. When Jem is dared to touch the house by Dill, he does. This is childish. Jem says, “touch the house, that all?” he’s showing courage but it’s immature courage because all he’s doing is touching a house. Childish courage shows in the book when Dill and Jem try and look through Boo Radley’s window. “Dill and Jem were simply going to peep in the window with the loose shutter to see if they could get a look at Boo Radley.” This is childish of them because they’re looking in some ones window, but it’s courage because Boo Radley is “scary”.

    1. I wrote my post about moral courage and you wrote yours on childish/immature courage. One thing you didn't do was put in the paragraph writing about a real world example of childish/immature courage. Also, on your first quote, you didn't capitalize the t in touch.

    2. I did basically the same courage but I put it as childish courage. Though immature courage sounds more intelligent than childish courage. In my comment to Mrs. Johnson, I had the same example but my quote was the way Scout described what she saw. I like how you have two examples from the book, that show how you understand what happening in the book. I mean like the understand of how to identify types of courage. Though you forgot to put a paragraph on how that type of courage is in the world. Other than that I think you have done a great job showing how that type of courage is in the book and what it is. Nice job Kajsa.

    3. A real life example of this is when someone is dared to do something they don't want to do. Even though they don't want to, they still do it.

  6. There are many types of courage but I will be focusing on bravery. Bravery is standing up for others when no one else will. In the real world bravery is shown through Martin Luther King Junior. He stands up for the black when they are going through a rough time in history. He leads people into protests about black equal rights. He knows he will be hated by some or maybe even killed but he still stands up for the black.
An example of the book is when Atticus stands up for tom Robinson in a trial and then when he goes to the jail to protect tom. “He is, we heard Atticus answer, and his sleeping. Don’t wake him up.” This shows bravery because Atticus won’t lie and say he isn’t in there to protect. He will just stay there and guard tom with his life when no one else would.

    2. The whole thing was written well. The Topic Sentence was there, which was followed by introducing the quote, then after that, the quote, and finally, you analyzed it well. The only thing that I could find to fix is capitalizing Tom when you say Tom Robinson.

    3. Very good although I don't think lying has anything to do with him protecting Mr. Robinson

  7. I chose to do childish courage, which is when you do a childish act thinking is shows you be courageous. Though it is mostly children who do childish acts and have childish courage. Childish courage is all around us. It like being dared to do something, jumping off a swing set, or even walking by a scary house. We label it childish courage because to us it is just childish acts, but to them it is their courage. That’s how they show their courage.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem and Scout are just little kids at the time. So to show their courage they do childish that they with will show their courage. Like when Dill dared Jem to touch the Radley’s house.”Jem threw open the gate and sped to the side of the house, slapped it with his palm and ran back past us,” Jem ran to touch the house to show he was courageous. Like children do childish act to show courage.

    1. I also did my paragraph on childish courage. You did a great job with the format and information you decided to put into your paragraph. You explained what childish courage was and you gave a great real world example of it. You also followed all of TIQA format throughout your information. I wouldn't change anything about it!

    2. you could of done a better job analyzing the citation. the second sentence in the second paragraph is confusing. other than that it follows TIQA well.

    3. This is similar to mine because I agree that doing something just because someone dares you to is an example of childish courage. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem and Scout do childish things to show courage. For example, what you said about Jem touching the Radley's house to prove to Dill that he wasn't scared. You did a good job in explaining childish courage in the book and in the real world.

  8. I have decided to write my paragraph on the type of courage that requires legitimate bravery, because I knew a lot of people would choose to do the childish/immature courage, since it is the easiest one.
Bravery is when someone is willing to do something that others wouldn’t. They will run towards disaster, while others run away from it. Examples of this in the real world are things such as the military and first responders. They risk their life almost every day to help protect others. On September 11th, 2001, the first responders to the terrorist attack were putting their lives in danger to help save people. In the war over in Afghanistan, thousands of U.S. soldiers go around every day stopping threats from affecting us in the United States.
The same thing goes on in the book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus Finch is protecting someone who can’t protect himself, and when no one else would be willing to do it. Another example would be when Mrs. Dubose decided to die without being addicted to morphine, and the only way that she could do that would be to not have it. But that meant that she couldn’t use it to get rid of the pain that she was going through. Any other person would have wanted to just use morphine to get rid of the pain until they died, but she had the courage to get off of it, and die free.

  9. One type of courage I chose was childish courage. Many children show their own courage in different ways such as doing tricks in the jungle gym to pestering people. Every child has shown courage at some point but in different ways.
Throughout “To Kill a Mockingbird” there were examples of childish courage. For example when Jem dared Dill to go and touch the house he did it just to prove to Jem that he has courage. Here is a line from the book that is a prime example of showing childish courage. “Jem through open the gate and sped to the side of the house, slapped it with his palm and ran back past us,” which shows us that Dill was just trying to show us that he has courage but in a childish way as well.

    1. I also did my paragraph on childish courage. You're TIQA format is good, but you forgot to put what childish courage is. Jem was the one who touched the house, not Dill. Good job though.

  10. Stupid Courage
Stupid courage exists in the real world like no other. It is probably the most numerous in this country. We have created shows like “Nitro Circus” perhaps the most idiotic things in the world have been done on this show. Things like going down a ski ramp on a “Big wheel” something I don’t have the will to do, but yet has no point to it.

The book to “kill a mocking bird” certainly is written based on reality and as a result contains this type of Courage. Like in chapter 11 when Jem lops off every camellia head in Mrs. Dubose’s Yard. Most certainly this took courage to enter the yard of the scary old lady that yelled at them everyday.

    1. You did a good job on showing your topic and examples in the real world, and in the book. The only mistake I see is when you put the book in quotes "kill a mocking bird", It should be "To Kill A Mockingbird"

  11. One type of courage is childish courage. Childish courage is an immature type of courage. In TKAM, both Jem and Scout show this kind of courage. Jem touching the Radley's house is an example of Jem's childish courage. Another example of childish courage is when Scout kicks the man who grabs Jems collar. People today show childish courage when they do stupid things just because someone dares them to.

  12. Childish courage is one type of courage from To kill a mockingbird and is shown when Jem touches the Radley`s house and scout kicks a man for touching her brother`s collar. There is also another type of courage shown in the book and that is Adult Courage and the person who shows this courage is Mr. Gilmer is trying erase the thought that was put into his by Mr. Ewell in the Trial part of the book

  13. Childish courage is when you do something that you think is very brave, but no one really thinks it’s brave, because it’s just a petty little thing that’s not at all a big deal. There are a lot of examples of childish courage in the world, like daring to step into someone’s yard or actually getting out of bed even when you think something is waiting for you under your bed.
In To Kill A Mockingbird childish courage is shown when Jem touches Boo Radley’s house, “Jem threw open the gate and sped to the side of the house, slapped it with his palm and ran back past us, not waiting to see if his foray was successful” (Lee 18). Jem, Scout, and Dill think that Boo Radley eats raw squirrels and live cats, and they also hear many other rumors that make them afraid of Boo. So, touching the Boo Radley place, to them, was very courageous, but to any practical adult it’s not at all a big deal that they touched the house.

  14. Childish courage is when it takes a lot of courage but to an adult it's nothing. A childish courage in To Kill A Mockingbird is when Jem touches Boo Radley's house. I see childish courage everyday but one of my favorite childish courage is when I dared my friend to moon the people that were driving behind us and since it was winter his butt got stuck on the back window of the truck. This would take childish courage because I couldn't see an adult doing that.

  15. Immature courage
There is a lot of immature courage in the world today, like when a kid goes someplace that they think is scary that isn’t actually scary at all. Kids think that they are being courageous when adults just see them as being childish.
Immature courage is shown in To Kill a Mockingbird many times. One is when Jem sneaks up to the Radley house and touches it. “Jem threw open the gate and sped to the side of the house, slapped it with his palm and ran back past us, not waiting to see if his foray was successful” (Lee 18-19). Jem only did this because Dill dared him to. Kids do things like that because they’re immature, but they still need courage in order to do them.
One of the other main examples of immature courage in the book is when Jem and Dill went to go peek in the Radley window. “You all’ve gone crazy, he’ll kill us!” (Lee 63-64). This shows that they know they will get in trouble if they’re caught, so they need courage to do it. What they are doing no grown up would even think about, but they are courageous for doing it anyway.

My final example of immature courage in the book is when Jem, Scout, and Dill went to the Radley house at midnight. When Dill said “Smatter?” “Chickens,” (Lee 71), he was kind of giving Jem courage because he was really scared of what the Radley’s would do to them if they were caught. Dill saying this to Jem gave Jem the courage he needed to it. It took a lot of courage in order for him to go up to the house, it just wasn’t very grown up.
