Tuesday, March 10 Agenda

  • Bell Ringer: Sit with your book club groups
  • Quill Time (work on the comma correction ones if you haven’t finished yet as well as the others assigned)
  • WN Entry (Quick Writes in Book Club section):
  • “We all know we are unique individuals, but we tend to see others as representatives of groups. It’s a natural tendency, since we must see the world in patterns in order to make sense of it; we wouldn’t be able to deal with the daily onslaught of people and objects if we couldn’t predict a lot about them and feel that we know who or what they are.”     -Deborah Tannen
  • Respond to this: Do you agree? Why yes/no? What parts? What is the benefit of looking for patterns? What gets lost when we view the world like this? When is it harmful or offensive to see others as representatives of groups?
  • Independent Reading Time
    • Thought log: if you were gone yesterday, talk to those who were here yesterday about expectation reminders
  • Take out a sheet of paper from your Book Club section of your binder: Discussion Discussion (previous slide)
    • Discussion Guidelines and Rubric
  • Writer’s Workshop: REVISE and EDIT
    • All parts of the story
      • Make sure your story has all aspects of a plot chart (especially the falling actions/resolution)
    • Show don’t Tell
      • Make sure you have LOTS of details!
    • Revising sometimes means taking things out that don’t work.
    • Fluency- make sure your story SOUNDS good and that sentences and words flow
    • Edit/Proofread
        • Pink: basic conventions (punctuation (other than commas), capitalization, verb tense, etc.) fluency
        • Yellow: things that are in your editing section: sentence structure (fragment/run-on, comma splice, commas), dialogue format, etc.
      • Print out your story if it will help you check for errors more.
    • After first meeting: Meet with me if you would like; make sure you have a purpose in our meeting…
