AoW Small Group Discussion

With your group of four, begin by discussing any questions that you had on the article.  Try to help each other answer, or at least talk about, the different questions that come up.  Next, talk about any connections anyone made.  Once you've gone through those, talk of any deeper insights that people wrote down.  make sure to add comments, if necessary, to your draft to help you write your response (which is due tomorrow since we don't have school on Friday).

Before your group is done, you need to post (as a comment to this post) these things:

  • At least one unanswered question you'd like the large group to talk about
  • One connection that a group member made to the article
  • At least three deeper insights or points made during your discussion.
Make sure you put your group members' names on the top of the comment.

  1. 1. Why do ticket sales spike during recessions?
2.When Grace had foreign exchange students they were fascinated about the lottery and thought it was a waste of money.
    3. We think it's stupid that you have to give 40% of your winning back to the government
The lottery is a good way for the government to make money.
Poor people spend more on lottery tickets because they have bigger hopes to win
We don't think it's really a tax because nobody is forcing you to buy a ticket

  2. People that usually buy lottery tickets are usually people who hate taxes. The only connection we have is, our parents sometimes buy lottery tickets. It's a wast of money, people think the taxes are going towards education and it does go towards that, people who buy tickets hate taxes usually.

What percentage of lottery winners go bankrupt, do many people put it in a bank or do they just stuff it under their mattress.
In Garfield he wins the lottery and everybody just starts flocking to him asking trying to be his friend just for his money.
If you win the lottery don't brag about it because that is basically asking people to rob you and bad things to happen to you.
People will always try to take advantage of those who don't need any better.
    Gambling addiction can help anyone.

-Why would you waste money on the lottery with such small odds?
-Our parents buy lottery tickets but, don't buy $500 worth of lottery.
-We thought about how unhappy people are when they win.
-we talked about the prize money and when people split how they aren't happy with the amount of money.
-we also talked about the fact about how addicting the lottery.

1.Why do we have the lottery if it is only going to bring greed, tragedy, and a very likely chance of being worse than you were and in the red.

2.We all had a connection to the lottery in some way,but none that was to serious and discerning.

3.The Intense greed, the hope where there is no hope in the slim infinitesimal chance of winning, and how we want to make things better with no knowledge of what "good" things can do for us

Our question is does any money from the lottery actually make it in to the education funds?
One of the connections we made is that every adult we know has played the lottery at least once.
-Some people 1/50 of their salary on playing the lottery
-Winning the lottery can leave you worse off than you started
-Which is better lottery or alcohol they are both the same thing but which do you get more satisfaction out of?

    1. Why are the financial advisers advise these people so poorly? Wouldn't that ruin there reputation?
    2. We had heard of the metaphor that you have a better chance of being struck by lightning than winning the lottery.
    3. Why did these people ruin their lives? We were surprised by how little your chance of winning the lottery is. We also talked about what money does to people.

How would our economy change if the lottery was cancelled?
One connection we had was that we all know someone who has played the lottery
The money could go to much better things, the chances of winning are so slim, and is fueled by extreme greediness
