Words of Wisdom from To Kill a Mockingbird

Pick a quote from the poster or something that you have annotated that you feel would be important to people in the 'real world' today.  In the TIQA format that we have practiced, with a correct in-text citation after the textual evidence, explain why that quote is important and wise for people today.

Remember, an in-text citation comes at the end of the textual evidence.  It should look like this: "Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing" (Lee 23).

Your paragraph should be a comment to this post (remember to copy and paste so that it doesn't disappear...)

  1. Words of Wisdom

reasons for people to use words of wisdom from previous chapters is to prove things true. Its a sin to kill a mockingbird...mockingbirds don't do one thing but makes music for us to enjoy.(pg 119).
This fits into today's group discussion because of how the trial went down by atticus telling everyone the truth of what happen and the mockingbird comes in when he said this trial is for this mans life and he had sworn by his right hand to god and she was hit by a left handed person.Tom is the mockingbird in this chapter.

  2. People in the world today could use some of the words of wisdom in To Kill A Mockingbird. My favorite line is said by Mrs. Maudie after Atticus shot the dog. “Oh, you have to practice to make it perfect” (Lee 130). The whole quote itself is wise because the more you work on something the better it will actually get. I think it is important to people today because it speaks the truth if you ever want to get better at anything in life you just have to practice over and over again until you get it just the way you want it. Mrs. Maudie says the quote because Jem and Scout were so impressed with Atticus’s shot and they were wondering how he has such good aim. She explains to them that practice makes perfect. I also think it connects in the world because my mom has even told me “practice makes perfect” whenever I was struggling with my volleyball serve and eventually I started to get better because I kept practicing.

  3. Wisdom is what makes us strong. We use it to guide us through life. In To Kill a Mockingbird they give us some wisdom that everyone and anyone could use. Miss Maudie says, “You have to practice to make it perfect”(Lee 130). Which is true. You can’t just expect to be perfect at something on a first try. It takes lots of practice. But don’t get me wrong your not gonna be perfect at everything you try and the world also needs to know no one is perfect. We put ourselves at such high expectations but forget we can only take one step at a time to get there or we’ll stumble at the feet and fall. So take one step at a time and eventually you’ll get somewhere great. As we practice our wisdom shall grow.

  4. There are many quotes throughout To Kill A Mockingbird that I feel people today would still find important. Among the many quotes is a quote by Atticus after Jem went to apologize to Mrs. Dubose about ruining her garden while Atticus and Scout are talking. “They’re certainly entitled to think that, and they’re entitled to full respect for their opinions, but before I can live with other folks, I’ve got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience (Lee 139-140). This quote shows wisdom, because Atticus is talking about how at the end of the day, you are the only person who’s opinion matters. Everyone else can judge you but at the end of the day, you have to live with the decisions that you make and there is no voting about whether or not you made the right choice, it’s your clear conscience that counts. It is still wise today because you shouldn’t make decisions based on what others think of you. Your choices are based on what you think and not what other think, so don’t make decisions to please other people.

  5. In today’s world, we have all become blind to the fact that no one is perfect and no one can be perfect. Many people focus on what others can’t do and what they did not what they can do and what their future holds. Atticus points this out in the book To Kill A Mockingbird, during the court hearing there are blacks and whites at this hearing and he says this to everyone. “There is not a person in this courtroom who has never told a lie, who has never done an immortal thing, and there is no man living that who has looked upon a women without a desire” (Lee 273). In this sentence, Atticus is being strait forward and saying the truth that a lot don’t want to hear, but it is true, back then and today. By him saying this, I think it really shocked the crowed and opened their “blind eyes.” This is wise because a lot of people will judge others and push aside their problems when they should be working on their own problems

  6. An important lesson to learn from TKAM is that you should keep the moral innocence and understanding of a child. In chapter twenty when Mr. Raymond reveals his biggest secret and Alias, Scout asks him why he’s told them. He then replies,”Because you are children and can understand it”(Lee 268). He has lived under this falseness because no one has ever asked him only pre-judged him, but Dill and Scout can understand because they have not been corrupted by gossip and stereotyping that many adults live behind. They can understand because they do not have grudges or discriminate against other races as grownups did in these times.

  7. People today need the wisdom in To Kill a Mockingbird. There is one particular quote in the book that is wise and people need. It is located in the book when Miss Maudie’s house burnt down. After her house burnt down, Miss Maudie looks on the bright side by saying to Jem, “Always wanted a smaller house, Jem Finch. Gives me more yard. Just think, I’ll have more room for my azaleas now!” (Lee 97). This quote is wise and is needed by people today because whenever there is a tragedy, most people don’t think of the good outcomes. There is almost always a bright side to look on or a lesson to learn in a situation where it seems impossible. People need this wisdom so they are happier in life.

  8. My words of wisdom from TKAM is about fighting with your head as Atticus says but what he means is out smarting your opponent rather than physically attacking them. Atticus knows scout like to get into fights when defending something see believes in, but do to the circumstances and scout getting older Atticus is trying to teach scout a better more appropriate way of standing up for what she believes in. “Try fighting with your head for a change… it’s a good one,” (lee 101). Atticus is trying to get scout to realize that there is a more appropriate way to settle arguments than with her fists. He wants scout to not only understand that she needs to start maturing but also thinking before she acts.

  9. To Kill a Mockingbird can teach everyone a few words of wisdom that they can use in the modern world. In the beginning of the book Scout got in a fight and Atticus was giving her “The Talk” about what she did and what she shouldn’t do. Atticus said, … you just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anybody says to you, don’t let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change… it’s a good one, even if it does resist learning” (Lee 101). Atticus taught Scout a lot here. We can use this everyday. When you someones is bullying you don’t use your fists to fight back, use your head and think about what is better for the situation. These words Atticus said can help everybody from getting in fights, words or physical.

  10. some people in the world fight with people with their fists and others fight with their head. i think that if you are going to fight with someone that you should fight with your head. atticus says to scout that she should fight with her head instead of her fist because he says that words are just as strong as fists. i believe that this was a good thing for atticus to say. i think it is important that people only fight with words in the world today because if people fight with fists or guns or anything like that you can actually kill people and it is better to just fight with words.
you might hear some ugly things about it at school but do one thing for me and hold your head high and keep them fists down (lee 101). when atticus says this i think he is trying to teach scout to grow up and fight with words not fight with your fists.

  11. Words of Wisdom

A quote from the book To Kill A Mockingbird that I think will be important to people in the world today to think about is when Atticus tells Scout to think about things from Miss Caroline’s point of view instead of assuming that she just wants complete control and to make learning terrible. To put it in words that Scout understands, Atticus says “...You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-” (Lee 39). He is saying that Scout cannot judge Miss Caroline on her teaching strategies yet because she may have plans that build off of a certain way of teaching. It is a very wise thing to say because people are always judging people before they even get to know them or even begin to understand what people are going through. I think that this happens way too much today, people are misunderstood and from a slight misunderstanding racism, wars and other problems form. If people would take a minute to step back from a situation and think about what the other person is going through there would be less harsh decisions and therefore more wise people in the world.

  12. There are many quotes in To Kill a Mockingbird that can be used in the real world today. One of the quotes that stood out to me was when Scout was judging her teacher, Miss Caroline, about how she said that Atticus can’t teach her (Scout) how to read, then Atticus told her a quote of wisdom. “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (Lee 39). In this world, there is many people who judge their peers without thinking of what it could be like in their shoes for one day. For example, in a high school there is always someone who will judge you if you don’t have the “cool” clothes or don’t have a very stable family relationship. Teenagers usually don’t understand that everyone doesn’t come from a great environment or situation in their life which makes those people become not “popular”. This quote influences people that they need to stop judging others and try to step in their shoes live their life.

  13. The wisdom from To Kill a Mockingbird still applies to people today. Atticus says to scout because her friends are making fun of her and she’s fighting back: “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down” (lee 101). I think this applies to people today, a lot of people today get overly upset about the wrong things such as getting cut off while driving, granted this kind of thing can be annoying but people go extremes to “get back” at the person who cut them off like getting revenge is the most important thing. I think Atticus is right to tell scout to keep calm and that every parent should do the same for their children.

  14. To Kill A Mockingbird has a lot of useful wisdom. Atticus has giving many words of wisdom on fighting in the the book. Atticus knows scout well and he knows she likes to get into fights. He tries teaching her the right way to handle a situation by telling her not to fight. We see this when Atticus says, “Do one thing for me if you will, just hold your head high and keep those fists down.” (Lee 101) This quote proves my topic sentence because Scout is thinking without acting and Atticus wants her to think before she acts. Atticus doesn’t want scout fighting with her fists because she can harm others and stir up some trouble.

  16. People in today’s world need to be as caring as the people in To Kill a Mockingbird. In To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus told Jem one day when and Scout and Jem wanted to learn how to shoot their new air-rifles told them that they can shoot tin cans but if they wanted to shoot blue jays they could. Atticus said “ I’d rather you shoot at tin cams in the back yard, but I know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird(Lee 119). Later Scout and Jem to Miss Maudie’s house, and she tells them that it really is a sin to kill a mockingbird , because all they do is make music. There is no law that says that you can’t shoot a mockingbird, but back then everything is different from what today is. Today many people enjoy shooting animals just for fun, and they do not care about the well being of them. In To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus talks about mockingbirds as if the are sacred animals, and should be treated with the highest respect. If this would be the same in today’s world i think that there would be a stronger bonding between man and animals. There would be less abandoned animals left to die and more people would be willing to help out the animals that need love and support.

  17. To Kill a Mockingbird has wisdom that is relevant to today’s society. This Wisdom is seen in chapter 11 when Atticus tells Jem, “There was no point in saying you were sorry if you aren’t”(Lee 140). This is something that is especially important for children to realize in their life and can also be a reminder to adults too. It doesn’t make it any situation better if your apology isn’t sincere. Parents should be teaching their children what Atticus taught Jem. It is a good lesson to pass on for generations to come. It can help children become a more genuine person at a young age and that will hopefully stick with them for their entire lives.

  18. There are a lot of good little wisdom things inside TKAM, but one that stood out most to me was when Miss Maudie was talking with Jem and the others about Atticus and she said “people in their right minds never take pride in their talents”(lee 130) This kind of goes good with the world because a lot of people don’t take pride in their talents because if they know they have that one talent that no one else has, they wont take pride in it because they would hopefully be nice enough to just keep it to themselves or something but then again there are those people who brag about it so that connects with the world even better.

  19. There are plenty of pieces of knowledge from To Kill a Mockingbird that still relate to society today. Atticus is a very smart, respectful father that has lots of good advice, like when he told Scout what to do if somebody said something she didn’t want hear. “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down.” (Lee 101) Anyone today could use this recommendation to help them when they’re struggling with insults. When people overreact to insults it leads to violence, whether that means with their words or with their fists. Scout had punched a boy for calling Atticus names. Obviously, punching someone won’t solve anything.

  20. I am trying to chose words of wisdom that the book has given. I chose this one because I thought it was good here it is. You just keep your head high and your fists down (pg 101). I think this is important today because you should always keep your head up and not fight the person who is doing wrong to you or trying to hurt you. Don't scoop to their level. it proves this because you don't want to do the same thing to them that they are doing to you.

  21. People today need the wisdom in To Kill a Mockingbird. After Jem ruined Mrs. Dubose’s flower garden and Atticus found out he was talking to Jem about what he was going to do to makeup for what he had done to Mrs. Dubose’s flowers. Atticus said to Jem, “There was no point in saying you were sorry if you aren’t” (Lee 140). In this textual evidence the wisdom behind the quote is the truth. If you say you are sorry to someone and you don’t actually mean it then what is the point of opening your mouth. There is no point, you should only say what you mean to say or say anything at all. It’s worthless to you and others to say something you truly don’t believe or have empathy for. People today in this world do it all the time and it will save everyone time and energy if they honestly only say or do something when they mean it.

  22. To Kill a Mockingbird has quotes that can be used in the real world today. One of the quotes of wisdom I think that should be used today is when Atticus tells Jem what real courage is and what it means. Atticus tells Jem “I wanted to show you what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (Lee 149). I think what Atticus says is good advice and people today should follow it. If people followed the quote it would build confidence in themselves.
