Courage Paragraphs and Discussion Points 1/5

}Based on your focus point notes (or the poster), explain (in paragraph form) one of the different types of courage that exist in the world and how it has been shown in TKAM.  You need specific quotes from the novel to use while proving your point.  This should be at least a paragraph in length. I’d suggest the first paragraph should be explaining the type of courage in the world and the second should be that type in the book. (Typed as a comment on my blog; write in paragraph format! TIQA!).

Things to discuss for Monday's small group discussion:
}Focus points
Coming of Age (difference between Scout and Jem, Reality vs. Ideal)
Courage
Stereotypes/Prejudice/Discrim
Empathy
}Scout says there’s a change when Atticus talks to Aunt Alexandra near the beginning of ch 16, why might Atticus be upset with his sister (Alexandra)? (what does AA mean when she talks about The Quarters and Cal?)
}How are Mr. Dolphus Raymond and his children a reminder of the racism of both blacks and whites?
}Write answers to these last three bullets:
Talk about Bob Ewell –why does Atticus ask the question about what hand he uses? (more than just this question)

Page 117: Read what Atticus tells Jack about the case and his kids.  What is he trying to do through all of his lessons? What does he hope for his kids
Ch 18: Mayella’s Testimony –Mayella’s decisions
Ch 18: Mayella’s home life –what is it like

  1. What is courage? Courage is sticking up and making a difference. Being courageous happens a lot, yet some would say otherwise it happens. People may not know that they are and can change everything. Being Courageous also depends on the persons point of view of what’s happening. Scout see’s herself as a courageous person. As she tries to be courageous others just think she being foolish and wanting attention. She tried showing her bravery and courage by stopping a group of men from attacking atticus outside the courthouse. Scout thought that her courage was helping but others like Jem thought she was being dumb and could of got hurt. Having courage can be easy but being courageous takes strength; Because when you make a difference you will know.

  2. I plan on explaining and showing ignorant courage or a type of childish courage. In the world today I would call it ignorant courage because its courage that a person has because they don’t fully understand the situation. It’s a false confidence. In TKAM It is still a type of ignorant courage but it is shown through scout who does not understand the situation because she is a child. Like when scout runs into the mob of men to see Atticus and she realizes it wasn’t the men from the other day. Chapter 16, pg 203 “ There was a smell of stale whiskey and pigpen about, and when I glanced around I discovered that these men where strangers.” Scout would have never ran off into that crowd if she knew it was a bunch of drunk angry farmers instead of Atticus’s friends from the night before. She acted with courage to barge in on the group but loses her confidence when she figures out what is actually happening.

  3. In the book to kill a Mockingbird multiple types of courage are shown. A type of courage shown mostly by scout is confident courage. Confident courage is even though you don’t know how to do something, you still believe you can. It’s having the courage to do something you haven’t done before without hesitation and believing you can do it.
Scout show confident courage when Jem says to the reverend “…it’s okay…she doesn’t understand it” After Jem says that scout immediately replies but before she shows confident courage she says she was “mortally offended”. Then Scout says “I most certainly do, I c’n understand anything you can.” In those ten words she proves that she has confident courage. “I c’n understand anything you can” sets it up as she doesn’t know what they are talking about so she’s going in with the disadvantage but then she believes that she can do it which shows courage with a touch of confidence. In conclusion scout showed confident courage through this scene in the book.

  4. Self Courage
Self Courage is like standing up to yourself if you know what I’m saying. Your good self conscience is telling you that what you are doing or thinking or feeling is not right. Its finding the courage to stop your body from habits or pressure such as pulling your hand away from that remote when you have piles of homework or stopping yourself from thinking about someone or something in a wrong way.
An example of self courage would be in chapter nine when Scout is about ready to punch Cecil Jacobs:”My fists were clenched and ready to let fly… [I realized] I was far too old and too big for such childish things.”

  5. One of the many type of courage, can be doing the right thing. Sometimes, the difference between doing the right thing and doing the wrong thing, is lack of courage. Stepping out of your comfort zone, standing up, and speaking out for something you know is right can be difficult. You’re not always sure that what you’re going to say is going to change their mind or if standing up will help at all. You’re taking a risk and putting your neck out there. Everyone waits for someone else to come along.
In To Kill A Mockingbird there are plenty of example of people at least trying to the right thing. In and throughout the whole story thus far, Atticus shows he has the courage to do the right thing. He was assigned to work the Tom Robinson case and defend him, when they clearly have the lesser hand. And despite the verbal abuse and questioning from his neighbors and peers, he defends him without complaint and allows his friends and family, to talk poorly about him. He accepts his job and works to the best of his ability to protect Tom and win the case, rather than let him be found guilty. He has courage because instead of complaining about how he was forced to take this case, he accepts that it won’t change and thing and tries his best to make sure that Tom has the best possible representation in court. In To Kill A Mockingbird Atticus is a perfect example of having the courage to stand up and do the right thing.

  6. Ignorant courage
A type of courage that first comes to mind is an ignorant courage, which I think almost all types of courage branch off of. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird the character Scout runs into a group of people thinking that if they see her father with her they won’t beat him up, because he has a little girl and Scout will probably remember the faces of all of the townspeople that participated. A small problem with her plan arose though, none of the people in the crowd were townsfolk, so instead of having a moment of complete, heroic courage, she made a big mistake because of ignorance. Chapter 16 Pg. 203 “Hot embarrassment shot through me: I had leaped triumphantly into a ring of people I had never seen before.” This shows that she was being ignorant not only by trying to stop people that she didn’t even know, but that she had put herself in danger because of her courage and this may cause her father even more harm.

Sadly ignorant courage seems to be more present in the world today than it should. Whether the courage is invoked by the people we are with, trying to impress friends for example, can lead to ignorant decisions which may result in crimes or the harming of themselves. I think that ignorant courage can’t be stopped because it is human nature, but in some peoples eyes, an idiotic type of courage is better than no courage at all.

  7. One of the different types of courage that exists in the world is childish courage. Childish courage is when a kid might think they are being really courageous, but it may be something really useless. This type of courage is shown in the world by children who might think great of themselves.
Childish courage is also shown in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. Jem shows childish courage when Dill dares him to knock on the Radley’s door. Scout says to the reader, “Dill bet Jem The Gray Ghost against two Tom Swifts that Jem wouldn't get any farther than the Radley gate...Jem threw open the gate and sped to the side of the house, slapped it with his palm and ran back passed us...” (Lee, 16-18) This text shows that Jem had childish courage because it was “dangerous” to him that he was going to touch the Radley house. It is childish because a mature person would never do it and it is silly.

  8. There are different types of courage one being protective. Protective courage is when you stand up and help someone that can’t do it themselves. Protective courage is when you have the person/people’s best interest at heart and help them get what they are trying to succeed.
TKAM shows protective courage when Atticus takes the Tom Robinson case. Atticus was coming home late and was always stressed about losing the case. Atticus was showing protective courage when he got the mob to leave Tom alone he said, “They’ve gone. Get some sleep, Tom. They won’t bother you anymore.” (Lee 206) Atticus shows protective courage through this because he came the scene and got the mob to leave Tom alone. He gave Tom the comfort of knowing he could get some sleep. This shows courage because the guys that were there could have hurt him.

  9. The type of courage I’m writing about it honest courage. In the world I see this when people speak up and say things that are true but nobody else has the guts to say. An example of this I think could be when a girl asks “does this outfit make me look fat?” most of the time our friends are too nice to tell us the truth but sometimes there are people who will tell you the truth if it looks bad or not. Even though people could risk losing or hurting their friends they tell them the truth because they use honest courage. My example shows honest courage because honest courage is a very hard thing to do and not many people use it.

A type of courage that I see in To Kill A Mockingbird is honest courage. I mainly see this in Scout and could probably also be called naive courage to fit Scout’s personality. Scout does not realize sometimes the things she is saying. Often times she is meaning to do the right thing but sometimes she does the wrong thing. Honest courage, I think is telling the truth even if it hurts someone. In the book Scout was the only child in the class who spoke up and told Miss Caroline that Walter was a Cunningham. “I rose graciously on Walters behalf: “Ah--Miss Caroline?” “What is it Jean Louise?” “Miss Caroline, he’s a Cunningham” I sat back down…” Harper Lee Pg. 26. When Scout stands up and says that Walter is a Cunningham even though it could hurt his feelings because Scout is pointing out that he is poor, she still tells Miss Caroline.

  10. There are many types of courage in the world. There is bravery, honesty, and many more. The one I’m going to talk about is naive courage. To me, naive courage is when you are doing something that stops someone from making a bad decision and you don’t realize that you are doing so. You mainly see it in children, which is what happens in To Kill a Mockingbird.

In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, you see naive courage in Jem and Dill when he is younger (in the beginning of the book) and also in Scout throughout the book(For right now). On page 69, “Dill and Jem were simply going to peep in the window with the loose shutter to see if they could get a look at Boo Radley.” Dill and Jem were having the guts to look through the window while not knowing what they were going to see, not knowing what was going to happen and also not thinking of the consequences, making them naive.

  11. One of the different types of courage in the world would be ignorant courage. Ignorance can give people courage to attempt things they never would have tried if they'd had more knowledge. It has been shown through Jem, he always has that brave side to his courage but would do things without fully understanding what he was doing. Chapter 14 page 187-188, Dills eyes flickered at Jem, and Jem looked at the floor. Then rose and broke the remaining code of our childhood. He went out of the room and down the hall. “Atticus,” his voice was distant, “can you come here a minute, sir?” Jem could have realized that what he was doing to scout, breaking their code but he didnt.

  12. A type of courage that is seen today is genuine courage. Genuine courage is acting courageous because you think it is the right thing to do. This is seen when people stand up for others even though they might get looked down upon themselves. One example of this could be in schools when there is a student being bullied and another child comes in and stands up for them even if it means they also get bullied.
Genuine Courage is also seen in the book To Kill a Mockingbird Bird. In chapter 11 after Scout asked Atticus if he really was the horrible name Mrs.Dubose called him, he answered, “I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody...I’m hard put, sometimes-baby it’s never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name” (Lee, 144). This quote shows how Atticus has genuine courage because he isn’t scared about how other people think of him for defending Tom Robinson even if he really is scared on the inside he doesn’t show it. He is only doing what he sees as the right thing. A lot of the people in Maycomb are not treating him fairly by calling him names, but he stays strong and doesn’t worry about the harsh opinions of others.

  13. There are many different types of courage but the one that stands out most to me is doing the right thing. To do the right thing most of the time you have to step outside of that comfort bubble and do something that will change your life, even if the consequences are not the way you though. In To kill a Mockingbird there are many different ways that this type of courage has been shown. An example is “ If you are defendin’ him, then why are you doin’ it?”
“For a number of reasons,” said Atticus. “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this country in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again.”(Lee,Chapter 9, page 100) Atticus shows us a great deal of courage here by stepping out of his comfort zone and taking up Tom Robinson’s case. He shows the most bravery out of all the main characters in the book and for this act of pure bravery he has proven himself to to black community that there are people, white people, out there in the world that are willing to help, and support the welfare of other people that are not the same color as themselves.

  14. One type of courage shown in both our world and To Kill A Mockingbird is moral courage. In the world we live in, moral courage is everywhere. One example is a firefighter, nobody wants to risk their life for someone they might not even know. Maybe that someone is a murderer or a thief, but the firefighter would still overcome their fears and jump through flames to save them, because it is the right thing to do.
A way we see moral courage in To Kill A Mockingbird is through Jem. He read to Mrs. Dubose even though he was scared of her and didn’t even want to be in her house. “The following Monday afternoon Jem and I climbed the steep front steps to Mrs. Dubose’s house and padded down the open hallway. Jem, armed with “Ivanhoe” and full of superior knowledge knocked at the second door on the left. ‘Mrs. Dubose?’ he called.” (Lee 141) Even though Jem thought Mrs. Dubose was nasty and scary he still went to her house to read. It was the right thing to do for Mrs. Dubose and also to set a good example for Scout.

  15. Immature Courage- It’s doing something that is out of stupidity and it’s an act without thinking, it also doesn’t benefit anyone. Doing this type of immaturity doesn’t do anything but acting without thinking, many people do it more than others.
This paragraph proves that immature courage doesn’t help you or your situation. Acting without thinking like Jem did when he “snatched Scout’s baton and ran wildly up the steps into Mrs. Dubose’s front yard, forgetting everything Atticus had said, forgetting that she packed a pistol under her shawls, forgetting that if Mrs. Dubose missed, her girl Jesse probably wouldn’t.” (Lee, #137) Jem got mad at Mrs. Dubose who is an old crabby women for yelling at them when they walked by her house, Jem got sick and tired of her yelling at them and started beating and crushing all of her camellia's and when he was done with that he broke Scout’s baton. Jem wasn’t thinking of what his consequence would be when he did acted out with stupidity.

  16. Brave/Heroic Courage
In To Kill A Mockingbird, brave/heroic courage is shown in the book (Lee Pg.92-93) when Jem said, “Atticus, reckon we oughta start moving furniture.” He has courage for wanting to help Mrs. Maudie as her house is burning. He is trying to save some pieces she might miss. Atticus also showed courage because he saved Mrs. Maudie’s heavy oak rocking chair out of the house before it would burn. She valued the chair the most. It also showed brave/heroic courage because Atticus didn’t have to save it but did. He did the right thing without anyone having to tell him.

  17. Doing the right thing courage,
Doing the right thing involves making a choice. You have two choices, one will be the right thing to do according to either your moral compass, or your religious beliefs. The other choice is to do what you want to do regardless of who it hurts, or what you know is right one example from the book is (lee #37) When chucks little hand went to his pocket. “Watch your step, Burris,” he said “Id kill you as soon as look at you. Now go home.” I thought this was a good example because, Chuck didn’t have to stand up for the teacher against Burris he was doing the right thing and you may not say its courage but Chuck is half Burris’s size so that takes a lot of courage for a little man to stand up to someone much bigger than him.

  18. There are different kinds of courage. Courage means “The ability to do something that frightens one.” One kind is forced courage. Forced courage is when you are forced to do something that would be courageous, or something that you normally wouldn’t like to do.
In the book TKAM forced courage is shown by Jem. Jem was forced to do something courageous after he destroyed Mrs Dubose’s flowers. Atticus says “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (Lee pg. 149) And when Atticus says “Son, I told you that if you hadn't lost your head I’d have made you go read to her.”(Lee pg. 149) This shows what courage is and he would have made Jem read to her even if he didn't “lose his head”.

  19. I am talking about the courage you use when you are scared.
like when dill went up to mr radleys window and looked in.
and when atticus shot tim johnson (dog). and when boo gets
the courage to leave the safety of here to give jem and
    scout the blanket.

  20. Forced courage is when someone pretends to have courage in order to convince someone around them that they aren’t afraid. For instance when someone is in a state of depression they tend to pretend that there is nothing wrong.
Forced courage is shown when jem forces himself to act brave and touch the house to impress dill and make him think he isn’t scared (pg 16 Dill says: “you’re to scared to even put your big toe in the front yard”) This shows that dill thinks he’s scared, so wanting to prove him wrong jem touches the house so that he couldn’t be called scared.

  21. Physical Courage

Physical courage is being brave even though you you have a risk of bodily harm or even death. Physical courage is the most common that people think of first, like “what if the plane crashes” or “will It hurt if i drove into the ditch”. It is shown multiple times in the book “To Kill a Mockingbird”, and it goes well with the book because the kids take risks near the Radley house even if its possible to be killed. An example is when Jem ran back to the Radley’s house to get his pants, even after being shot at by Mr.Radley.

  22. Courage is all around us whether it is touching a house that is seemed haunted or telling a teacher about a boy who is poor and can’t pay her back. The courage I want to talk about is the courage it takes to beat something like being a morphine addict. This type of courage is relentlessness and in To Kill A MockingBird there is an example. “Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict,...She said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that’s what she did.” (Pages 147,148) I think that is relentlessness because she refused to die until she was clean of morphine. That took a lot of courage and strength to do that, and Atticus agreed he said that it took a lot of courage too. “I wanted you to see what real courage is.” (Page 149)

  23. bravery courage
bravery courage is when someone does something that is pretty brave or something that takes a lot of guts to do. this courage exists in the world today when people will go out and get something that may mean risking their life but they go do it anyway. this courage happens quite often but not as much as other courages but it is a bigger courage than others.if someone has bravery courage it most likely means they would take a risk for there life for someone else or so that they dont get in trouble by someone.
i think that jem is pretty brave and he has brave courage when he goes to mr. radleys house in the dark to go get his pants after he gets them ripped off by a fence when running away and he did it even though mr. radley threatened to shoot anyone who comes in his yard again. (pg 75) i think jem has bravery courage because he does this in some other spots and he just seems quite brave.

  24. Natural Courage

When a person has natural courage, it can seem like they aren't afraid of anything, they might do crazy reckless things, or seem like they might have a death wish. Atticus has a natural courage. In the book, Miss Maudie's house was on fire, and Atticus ran inside of it to grab Miss Maudie's most prized possession. Harper Lee wrote, as being Scout, “I saw Atticus carrying Miss Maudie’s heavy oak rocking chair, and thought how sensible of him to save what she valued most.” Atticus went back inside, even though he could've died, to grab something that didn't matter/concern him, just to help somebody else. That shows his natural courage.
