Courage Paragraph

After we discuss 'types' of courage as a whole class, you will need to pick a type of courage and write about it in the book:

Paragraph Assignment:  Based on your focus point notes (or the poster), explain (in paragraph form) one of the different types of courage that exist in the world and how it has been shown in TKAM.  You need specific quotes (TEXTUAL EVIDENCE) from the novel to use while proving your point.  This should be at least a paragraph in length. I’d suggest the first paragraph should be explaining the type of courage in the world and the second should be that type in the book. (Typed as a comment on this post; write in paragraph format! TIQA!).

  2. Protective courage:

Protective courage is when you have courage to stand up for someone or something. A quote from To Kill a Mockingbird, created by Harper Lee, is as follows, “With movements so swift they seemed simultaneous, Atticus’s hand yanked a ball-tipped lever as he brought the gun to his shoulder. The rifle cracked.”(Lee 127) This is where Atticus shoots the rifle at the dog. He would have not done this if he did not have protective courage. This courage drove him to take the shot, even when he didn’t believe he could do it, he still shot.

  3. Loving Courage:

One example of courage in To Kill a Mockingbird is a loving courage. In To Kill a Mockingbird when Jem ruined Mrs. Dubose’s plants and had to make for for what he did by reading to her, Atticus showed Jem he loved him by teaching him what real courage is. When Mrs. Dubose dies and sends Jem the camellia Jem freaks out and says, “Old hell-devil, old hell-devil/ why can’t she leave me alone?” (Lee 148).

After Jem is mad about Mrs. Dubose sending him the flower Atticus says to Jem, “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (Lee 149). Atticus shows Jem he loves him by teaching him what real courage is and having the courage to let his son be in trouble when he defended him.

  5. A type of courage that is present in To Kill A Mockingbird is rebellious courage. Rebellious courage is facing your fears only because your actions resist control, present the unexpected or disobey authority.

This type of courage is displayed in To Kill A Mockingbird when Dill dares Jem to touch the Radley house. Jem has never backed out of a dare before and Scout says, “I suppose he loves honor more than his head,” (Lee 16). This observation by Scout shows that though the results of the situation may not be in favor of Jem, he will proceed with it anyway not only because he has never backed out of a dare but also because of the rebellion involved. Jem completes the dare because he wants to keep his dignity. This act of rebellion satisfies his needs.

  7. One of the types of courage that shows is Bad or negative courage. Bad or negative courage is the ability to do something difficult or dangerous and most likely something that could get you in trouble.
This type of courage shows in a couple different spots in the book To Kill a Mockingbird. One example of bad courage is in the book when Burris had the courage to yell at it his teacher and say, “Report and be damned to ye! Ain’t no snot-nosed slut of a schoolteacher ever born c’n make me do nothin’! You ain’t makin’ me go nowhere, missus. You just remember that, you ain’t makin’ me go nowhere!”(Lee 37) This would be bad courage because it is not a good thing to yell at your teacher, but Burris had the courage to do so.

  8. One type of courage that can be seen in To Kill a Mockingbird is moral courage. Morals are your standards of behavior or beliefs which tell you what is acceptable to do and what is not. Moral courage is standing up for your beliefs and being able to do what you think is right.

Moral courage can be seen in To Kill a Mockingbird when Mrs. Dubose decides she will die free of morphine. After she has died, Atticus tells Jem, “She said she meant to break herself of it before she died, and that’s what she did” (Lee 148). Mrs. Dubose believed she had to die indebted to nothing, including morphine. She had the courage to break free of using morphine before she died to align with her morals.

  9. A type of courage that is used in To Kill a Mockingbird is protective courage. Protective Courage is protecting someone while you may face consequences.

Protective courage is shown in To Kill a Mockingbird when Jem loses his pants and Dill stands up for him. When Dill says “We were playin’ strip poker up yonder by the fishpool,” (Lee 73). Even though they weren’t and Miss Rachel yelled at him for playing strip poker so he was protecting Jem and Dill for what happened and he knew there was going to be a consequence when he told Atticus that.

  11. One type of courage shown in To Kill a Mockingbird is bad courage or having the courage to do something bad. Bad courage can have a negative impact on people because you are overcoming fears but you are still doing something bad. This type of courage is shown when Jem is angry at Mrs. Dubose so he takes Scouts baton and destroyed all of her flowers. “Jem snached my baton and ran flailing widly up the steps of Mrs. Dubose’s front yard … he had cut the top off every camellia bush Mrs. Dubose owned (Lee 137). This was bad courage because jem had courage to show Mrs. Dubose up but he did in in a bad way. destroying the flowers had a bad impact on other people but he had the courage to do it so that is why its bad courage.

  12. One type of courage that can be seen in TKAM and the world is protective courage. Protective means you have a strong wish to keep someone or something away from harm. Some people are protective over things like their phones, family heirlooms, collectable items, or almost anything else you can think of. People are also protective other people, or things that can’t be seen like their faith, or privacy. In TKAM Scout and Jem are protective over another person, Atticus. One way that can be seen is when Jem got angry and smashed Mrs.Dubose’s flowers with Scouts batton. He was getting back at her for saying all those horrible things about Atticus.

  13. There are many different types of courage, and one that can be seen in the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” is protective courage. Protective courage can be when one is protecting themselves or another person. In the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” one way we can see protective courage is when Jem takes Dill’s dare. “Jem threw open the gate and sped to the side of the house, slapped it with his palm and ran back past us,”(Lee 18). When Jem is taking Dill’s dare he is protecting himself from what Dill or others might say if he didn’t do it. He wants to make it seem like he isn’t afraid of the house even if he is, which is overcoming a fear and the definition of courage

Another example of protective courage is when Scout kicks the man that grabs Jem,”He yanked Jem nearly off his feet. ”Don't’ you touch him!” I kicked the man swiftly.” (Lee 203,204) She’s showing protective courage by sticking up for Jem even against someone bigger than her. She’s showing what she would do to protect family.

  14. Childish Courage is one of the courages in TKAM, and in real life. The reason why I chose childish courage is because in the book How To Kill A Mockingbird it tells the group of children they’re showing bravery and courage. They go into unwanted places, very old and abandoned buildings to find new things that are not to familiar to them. (Lee 80) Today, there are a lot of children that show some bravery and courage including the ones that are not as brave as the others, like kids who show it. Other people would’ve thought that the stronger and older the children should be the brave ones. But, most of the time it’s the kids that are small and younger. It shows how much the smaller kids instead of the older kids.

  15. Negative courage is a type courage that can be found in the book “To Kill a Mockingbird”. In chapter 11, Jem took the baton that he bought for Scout and started destroying Mrs. Dubose’s flowers. “We had just come to her gate when Jem snatched and ran flailing wildly to the steps into Mrs. Dubose’s front yard, forgetting everything Atticus had said, forgetting that she packed a pistol under her shawls, forgetting that if Mrs. Dubose missed, her girl Jessie probably wouldn’t.”(Lee 137). This is courage because Jem knew there would be consequences for wrecking Mrs. Dubose’s flower bushes and he impetuously acted because Mrs. Dubose was talking badly about Atticus. This is negative courage because of the consequences from Atticus and Mrs. Dubose and because Jem’s intentions were not for good.

  16. One great courage is bravery courage. It shows it in To Kill a Mockingbird when Scout and Jem rolled in the tire and Scout told Jem to retrieve the tire and be brave about it and he needed that courage. "Get the tire. Bring it with you ...Why don't you get it , said scout ....Jem got the tire.
