We talked about how we feel that in a way it was disrespectful but also respectful. It just depends how you look at it. In their eyes they would be saluting a song that holds empty meaning to them. Where as everyone else see's the song as a tribute to the brave.
It's funny how people agree with a man who publicly disrespects the flag on national television. It just doesn't seem like a mature way to express your opinion. Evie C. and Austin Louis
Kaepernick was very disrespectful because he had stayed seated during the anthem. The very anthem that many true patriots have fought for. On the matter of patriotism, a person who displayed true patriotism and pride was Olympian Sam Kendricks; who is also an Army Reserve 2nd Lt.
" In truth, both men, in their own ways, behaved in a highly patriotic manner that should make all Americans proud." (Kendricks and Kaepernick ) My partner and I thought it was interesting how both articles in a way thought that Kaepernick did a patriotic thing and not a disrespectful thing. In some people's eyes it would be viewed as disrespectful to not stand during the national anthem. - Emma and Clayton
“There are a lot of things that are going on that are unjust that people aren’t being held accountable for. And that’s something that needs to change. That’s something that this country stands for — freedom, liberty, justice for all. And it’s not happening for all right now.”-Colin Kaepernick. We agree that Colin is making a good point with this quote, but maybe the way he is trying to change the country isn't necessarily the best.-Olivia, Maryama, Brad L.
"In truth, both men, in their own ways, behaved in a highly patriotic manner that should make all Americans proud." - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar We think the way that both men were described as being deeply patriotic while doing acts completely opposite was unusual but overall they both were sacrificing a lot. They believed that inspiring others was more important.
We discused how in some ways everything is patriotic. For example Kaepernick kneeling for the anthem, by doing this he is standing up for his beliefs. Lt.Sam Kendricks dropped his pole during his pole vault attempt when he heard the anthem start playing and stood attention to the national song. We agreed that patriotism is how you as a person see it. Ramsey & Garrett
They are both about patriotism and how everyone has a different way of expressing it. Kaepernick stated that he can't look in the mirror and see other people dying in the street that should have the same opportunities that he's had and say, you know what, he can't live with himself. Because he can't if he just watches. Kaepernick has the freedom to speak out his beliefs and that is exactly what he did. Raisa and Phillip
"In 1989, when a federal law prohibiting flag desecration went into effect, Vietnam Veterans burned the American flag as a protest to a law curbing the First Amendment. Their argument was that they fought for the freedoms in the Constitution, not a piece of cloth, and to curtail those freedoms was an insult to their sacrifice." We talked about the American flag is a piece of cloth, but it represents more than what Vietnam Veterans accused it to be. We found it hard to believe that they burned the flag.
Why should Kaepernick get away with what he's doing if others didn't? What Kaepernick is doing is not the right way, he doesn't mean to be offensive to the Veterans but everyone is taking it that way. We think of the flag as a symbol of how we represent America or atleast one of the reasons and it means a lot to the Veterans, The National Anthem is also another way we represent America and we shouldn't disrespect it regardless of what stand you want to make. -Raven & Connor
