Block 3: Rush to Marry - Comment with your Paragraph (3/30)

Rush to Marry

Why are Romeo and Juliet in such a rush to get married right when they meet?

Answer this question with a TIQA paragraph.  Your textual evidence can come from any point in the text.  Once you have typed your paragraph, copy and paste it as a comment to this post.

Example:
Romeo and Juliet are in a rush to get married because that is what people had to do in this culture at this time.  When talking to Juliet about marriage, Lady Capulet says, “ Younger than you,/ Here in Verona, ladies of esteem,/ Are made already mothers” (I, iii, 70-72). Lady Capulet is telling Juliet that other girls in their society are already married and having children, demonstrating the cultural necessity of marriage.  She also guilts Juliet a little by telling her that the people are younger than her, meaning that she should get going with finding someone to marry.

Remember, the Analysis portion of your paragraph explains why and how your evidence proves your topic sentence.  The goal of your sentence: HOW and WHY EXACTLY your quote proves the reason for rushing into marriage.

  1. I think Romeo and Juliet are in a rush to get married because in that time society said it was right to marry that young. While Paris was talking to Capulet about marrying Juliet he said.” Younger that she are happy mothers made”(I, II, 12). Paris is trying to persuade Capulet into letting him marry her by bringing up that other girls are already getting married. Paris is saying that many girls younger than her are getting married and having kids and that he thinks it’s time for her to do it to.

  2. Romeo and Juliet are in a rush to get married because there is a lot of pressure for Juliet to Marry Paris and she doesn’t really want to. When Juliet is speaking to Lady Capulet she says, “I’ll look to like, if liking move; / But no more deep will I endart mine eye.” ( I, iv, 98-99) Juliet is explaining that she will look with intention of liking him but she doesn’t seem sure that Paris will truly be the one. This shows her reluctancy to get married and how she would like someone better.

  3. Juliet and Romeo are in a rush to get married because of love at first sight. When Romeo sees Juliet at the party he falls in love and starts talking to himself. He says”Did my heart love til now. Forswear it,sight! For I ne’er saw true beauty until tonight.”(act 1 scene 5 lines 50-51) Romeo just saw Juliet and instantly fell in love. When they kiss Juliet falls in love with Romeo and they kiss again. With this in mind I think because they are so much in love they want to get married soon.

  4. Romeo and Juliet rush into marriage because if they were to get married then their parents would not want them to separate. This quote is shown by showing that Lady Capulet is very high class. "Nurse, where's my daughter? Call her fourth to me." (Act I Scene III) They have a reputation to keep so they would not ant Romeo and Juliet to split up because it would look very bad for both of their families.

  5. The reason Romeo and Juliet want to get married so quickly is because of the pressure her mom mostly is putting on her to get married soon because her mom got married young. (I,III, 73-75) "I was your mother much upon these years That you are now a maid. Thus then in brief: The valiant Paris seeks you for his love." This quote shows that her mom wants almost a need her to get married to Paris because of her age and how young you're supposed to get married.

  6. Romeo and Juliet are in a rush to get married because society wants women to marry young. When Paris is talking to lord capulet in act 1 scene 2 he states “Younger than she are happy mothers made.” ( I, II, 12). Paris is trying to show lord capulet that she should marry at a young age and become a mother. This is why Romeo and Juliet want to rush to get married. Society is pushing for women to marry at a young age and Juliet is trying to conform to society’s will.

  7. Romeo and Juliet were in a rush to get married because of the feuding families that they came from. This was shown when they both found out about where the others hailed from. When Juliet found out she said this and the feud was clearly shown, “ My only love, sprung from my only hate!” (I, v, 136). This quote showed that Juliet knew of the repercussions of her actions and could tell that something needed to be done. Because of this feud she knew she needed to marry him immediately before news spread throughout the family.

  8. Romeo and Juliet are in a rush to get married because of Romeo’s strong emotions and feeling of love at first sight. When Romeo is talking to Juliet while she is up in the balcony he says, “thou leave me so unsatisfied/exchange of thy love’s faithful vow for mine.” (Act 2, Scene 2, Lines 125 and 127) Romeo is showing how eagerly he wants to get married by not letting Juliet go even though she is hesitant to their relationship. Instead of just saying goodnight he asks for her faithful vow pushing for marriage to just seal the deal and not waiting.

  9. T-I-Q-A
Romeo and Juliet in a rush to get married because of the pressure on Juliet from her family wanting her to get married to Paris. As Juliet was talking to Romeo from a distance, she said, “If that love be honorable/ Thy purpose marriage send me word tomorrow/ By one that I’ll procure to come to thee” I feel like that means she is asking Romeo a time to get married, so that Juliet’s family saw she was married to Romeo and not Paris.

  10. Romeo and Juliet are in a rush to get married because Romeo is being impetuous. In the fifth scene of the first act Romeo goes to the Capulet party at Juliet’s house, and he says “Sin from my lips? O trespass sweetly urged! Give me my sin again.” (I,V lines 106-107) This statement clearly shows that Romeo is being impetuous because all he wants is her physical being and not her mental self. Throughout the next few acts Romeo’s mindset does not change especially when he goes to Capulet’s orchard and meets with Juliet in secret.

  11. Romeo and Juliet were in a rush to get married because the parents were in a feud. This was shown in the prologue when it says "From forth the fatal loins of these two foes.." (Prologue) we know they are "foes" from the beginning of the play. -Cloey Johnson

  12. Romeo and Juliet are in such a rush to get married because of the feud between their families and the potential consequences they could face for loving each other. During the balcony scene, Juliet tells Romeo, “If they do see thee, they will murder thee” (Shakespeare ll,ll). This tells us that the feud is at least on Juliet’s mind, if not Romeo’s as well. Juliet is concerned about the consequences of being seen with Romeo and Romeo being in her yard. I think that Juliet feels that if she marries Romeo, the two of them will be out of danger. So, to protect Romeo and possibly herself, Juliet decides to marry Romeo, which could bring strong reactions from both families, which Juliet hopes will turn into good.

  13. Romeo and Juliet are in a rush to get married because Juliet is under pressure from society and her mother to get married now and have kids. Her mother lady Capulet has been trying to get her to marry Paris and states, “I was a mother much upon these years,/ That you are now a maid. Thus then in brief:/ The valiant Paris seeks you for his love.” (I, iii, 73-75) The word maid in here really brings out why the mother wants Juliet to marry. It also explains why society is inspiring Juliet to hurry up and put a ring on it.

  14. Romeo and Juliet are in a rush to get married because if they get married Juliet will no longer be a capulet and they won't have to be enemies. An example of this is said by Juliet in, Act 2 Scene 2 Line 35-36: “be but sworn my love, and I’ll no longer be a Capulet.” In this line it’s saying that if they confess their love by getting married then she will no longer be a Capulet and they can be together

  16. Reson: It’s the right thing to do

Potential Evidence: Act 2 scene 2 lines 144,145

The reason Romeo and Juliet are in such a rush to get married because it is the right thing to do in( Act 2 scene 2 lines 144- 145) juliet says If that thy bent of love be honorable thy purpose of marriage send me word tomorrow. romeo is juliet's first love and she knows that it is proper to be married before they do anything else. So juliet is saying if romeo's love is true he will send her word of marriage in the morning

  17. Scene two, 38-49

Romeo and Juliet are in a rush to get married because, they may be worried how the family feud between the Capulets and Montagues could cause complications in the marriage. In the text it says, “What’s a Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot, nor arm, nor face, nor any other part belonging to a man. O, be some other name!” She says that the name Montague is the problem. So if Romeo was not a Montague then it wouldn't cause any problems.

  18. The reason Romeo and Juliet are in a rush to get married is because they both believe they are meant for each other and believe in love at first sight. In the play, Romeo says, “What lady’s that, which doth enrich the hand. Of yonder knight?” (A1 S5 39-40) Romeo was saying that he had just saw Juliet, and he is immediately entranced by her beauty. Romeo and Juliet also think that they are ready to get married now. “If that thy bent of love be honorable, thy purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow, by one the I’ll procure to come to thee, where and what time thou wilt perform the rite” (A2 S1 143-146) Juliet was saying that if Romeo wants to marry her tell her when and where. Romeo and Juliet just met and are already in love.

  19. Romeo and Juliet are in a rush to get married because of their parents’ rivalry. Before Juliet finds out that Romeo has been listening to her talking to herself, she says, “Deny thy father and refuse thy name! Or if thou wilt, be but sworn my love, and I’ll no longer be a Capulet,” (II, ii, 34-36). She is essentially saying “ It would be perfect if you were not a Montague. Change your name, or I’ll change my name through us getting married.” This quote is also a summary of the family rivalry. The families would most likely not support this marriage, so they are in a hurry to get it done with before either of the families can say anything about it.

  20. Romeo and Juliet are in a rush to get married because they want to avoid danger. Romeo and Juliet make the rash decision to marry so quickly in hopes to avoid causing any further trouble between the families. Juliet asks why Romeo has to be a Montague, and that her father would disapprove of Romeo. “O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name!” (I, ii, 33-34) Here, Juliet is saying that Romeo being a Montague is bad. They are hoping to be married before the Montague's and Capulet's have a say in the marriage.

  21. Romeo and Juliet are in a rush to get married because Juliet doesn't wanna marry Paris and won't be pressured by her mom. Romeo has lost his love but now loves Juliet. “Deny thy father and refuse thy name! Or if thou wilt, be but sworn my love, and I’ll no longer be a Capulet." If they marry they wont be a Capulet or Montague, and could separate their parents fued.

  22. Romeo and Juliet are in a rush to get married because they don't want anyone to find out about their relationship. Juliet says during the famous balcony scene, "...and the place death, considering who thou art/ If any of my kinsmen find thee here." Juliet is afraid that someone will find Romeo and Juliet together and will kill Romeo.

  23. Romeo and Juliet are in a rush to get married because of the feud with their parents and they don't want them to find out until after they get married. When Juliet is talking to the Nurse about Romeo after the party, she mentions it. "My only love, sprung from my only hate!... That I must love a loathed enemy" (Act 1 Scene 5). This shows that Juliet is already worried about loving her parent's enemy's son, and that they're going to do something to him. Therefore, they'd get married quickly so their parents can't say no or stop it.
