"Courage" Paragraph - Both Block 1 & 3 post here

Paragraph Assignment:  Based on your focus point notes (or the poster), explain (in paragraph form) one of the different types of courage that exist in the world and how it has been shown in TKAM.  You need specific quotes (TEXTUAL EVIDENCE) from the novel to use while proving your point.  This should be at least a paragraph in length. I’d suggest the first paragraph should be explaining the type of courage in the world and the second should be that type in the book. (Typed as a comment on this post; write in paragraph format! TIQA!).

  1. There are many types of courage in many different ways. In our world, courage is standing up for something, no matter the consequences because you know it is the right thing to do. As Atticus said, courage isn't a man with a gun, courage is a lot more than that. Some people like to believe that people in riots are courageous because they are putting their life on the line, but that is not the case. If someone is pointing a gun at you, trying to force you into a certain religion, courage is sticking with the right thing, as I said- no matter the consequence.
In "To Kill a Mockingbird", courage is displayed in how Atticus stands up for Tom Robinson. He knows that he will most likely not win the case due to racism, but he feels it is the best thing he can do. Just like courage today, Atticus is putting his reputation and safety behind him, and looking out for a man that is being falsely accused. He does not use a gun, that is not courage, he is doing the right thing and nobody can deny it. (Leo, Justin, Luke A.)

  2. The type of courage that is shown in To Kill a Mockingbird and in real life is the courage to be yourself and to be fearless about it. Scout is not afraid to be herself and to be more "boyish" than most. Scout shows her courage when her Uncle Jack asks her if she wanted to grow up to be a lady and she replies, "Not particularly." (Lee, 105) Scout is a courageous young lady whether she thinks she is or not, Scout countlessly sticks up for her self and shes fearless about who she is.

  3. Standing up against societal standard and standing up for what is right. Like when Jem decided to invite Walter over who had a lower social class than Jem which is very sweet of him because Walter's family doesn't have a lot of money. "Jem suddendly grinned come on home to dinner with us walter we'd be glad to have you." So even though Jem and Walter aren't even in the same social class. - Macy Moore, McKenzie Rombach, Reis Covey, Mathew Crandall.

  4. courage is everywhere in the world whether its the courage to stand up to someone or the courage to do something. The book shows courage in a variety of ways. It could be Jem, Dill and scout going out on their adventures or Jem and scout going to school. In chapter 14 where Dill left his home and hid under scouts bed that showed courage.

  5. Physical courage is one type of courage that is shown quite a bit in To Kill A Mockingbird. It's the courage to stand up to someone or something. It's shown in to Kill A Mockingbird by Dill. When Dill is hiding underneath Scouts bed (Pg. 140) he shows courage because he ran away from home and hid under Scout's bed.

  7. some of the examples of courage shown in the book is when Atticus takes all the rude comments about how he is shaming the Finch's name, and also Atticus shows courage by defending a black guy in court..

  8. world/physical courage is everywhere in the world whether its standing up for whats right or standing up for others and doing whats right. TKAM Atticus stands up for a black man Tom R. who was accused of rape, blacks were considered lower class and less powerful. Atticus saw no difference between whites and blacks which took courage to help a black man to do whats right.

  9. Courage shown in the world is when people stand up for what they think is right, even if people are against it. It is shown in TKAM when Atticus chooses to defend Tom Robinson because he knows Tom didn't do it and he knows it will have a big affect on his family. When Atticus is explaining to Scout about why he's defending Tom, he says, "If I don't I wouldn't be able to hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature." [ch.9 pg.75(skinny book)]

  10. The type of courage that is shown in both the real world and the book is perseverance. When Atticus is talking to Scout about the death of Mrs. Dubose, he says to Scout, "...I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked from the beginning anyway and you see it through no matter what" (Lee, 149). This shows that if you stick with a decision and see it through all the way to the end, no matter what happens or what people say to you, it is courage.

  11. A form of courage that is being shown in the world is when fire fighters are sacrificing their lives for people that they don't know out of the kindness of their hearts. This is shown in the book when Mrs. Maudie's house is on fire and people from her neighborhood went into her home and took her furniture out of her house. In chapter 8, Mr. Avery was on the second floor in Mrs. Maudie's house throwing furniture out of the window. "Come down from there, Dick! The stairs are going! Get outta there, Mr. Avery!" Someone shouted at Mr. Avery. This shows courage because other than jumping out of the window, there really isn't anywhere for him to escape, so he could have died trying to help Mrs. Maudie.

  12. Courage is shown in the world because people stand up for the rights they believe in. In TKAM Jem showed courage because he was standing up to his dad who was in potential trouble and he knew that that he needed to be there for his dad. As Atticus told Jem to go home Jem "Shook his head." (Ch. 15 pg 203). This show extreme courage because Jem usually listens to Atticus right away. This action then lead to Scout talking about Mr.Cunninghams kid and making the group leave, leaving Atticus safe. David, Caleb, Jared, Jordan

  13. The most obvious courage we interpreted was social courage. Social courage is shown in the book when Actticus defends Tom Robinson when this black man is accused of raping a white woman.(pg 206)The reason we chose this is because it stood out to us.

  14. A type of courage shown in the world is, standing up for people and what you believe in. An example of this shown in the real world would be like the Black Lives Matter Protests. This is also seen in To Kill A Mockingbird several times throughout the book. One specific example would be when the Cunninghams grab Jem by the collar and Scout kicks him and yells, “ ‘Don’t you touch him!’ “ (Lee 204). This shows courage in that Scout was standing up for her brother after he had been threatened by a large man and Scout shows courage in not backing down when standing up for her family.
