As your group is discussing today, make sure to keep track of the important ideas, points, and thoughts brought up.  You want to write focus points related things on your focus points sheet.  You should also write things on your article on Harper Lee while you talk about that.  At the end of your discussion, your group needs to post a comment to this blog.

The comment should include:
  • All group member names
  • Two important/interesting points about the chapter/focus points/questions from your discussion

  2. Alicia, Grace, Madison. Scout does not refer to her father as dad, only Atticus and father. What is rabbit tobacco exactly? We think that Lee used this chapter as a way to show how the characters personality and traits and to show the setting of the story. This allows the story to start without a lot of confusion. The "negro law" was totally unfair and did not give African Americans a fair trail. This also doesn't give new lawyers to improve. The article explains how the challenge of getting along with people who are different than ourselves is expressed in the book. One of the cases from Monroeville made a man go insane in prison and had to live his life in an insane asylum.

We talked about things like the Battle of Hastings and the Grey Ghost. Things that people would understand back then but have become obsolete references now. We also talked about humor from different times, as Charles/Dill got roasted.
From the paper we discussed how the story was very inspired by Lee's life, and how many historical fiction novels are very similar.

Three things we learned from the article is that the book still sells almost a million copies a year, Harper Lee never wrote another book, and Harper Lee defended the African Americans

    Book Discussion:
    1. We think that eventually come out of his house do to some circumstance
    2. We wonder why Scout always calls her dad Atticus.

    Article Discussion:
1.Harper Lee acts as a role model because she shows that a "nobody" can become a somebody.
2.We were kind of disappointed to find out that she never wrote another book and alcohol might have been one of the reasons why.
3.It sucks that Harper Lee's friend got so jealous and involved with drugs which made her an undependable friend.

All of our group read the first chapter. We didn't find it very entreating, and thought it was too repetitive. When she would say things like "15 years my senior" it was confusing for us. We figured out she was saying that they were 15 years older than her, we wondered why she didn't just say their age. Otherwise we understood the rest of it very well. We hope the book will become more interesting.

Two interesting points that we talked about in the first chapter of To Kill a Mockingbird was when Boo Radley stabbed his father in the leg with the scissors and when Jem ran up to the Radley home for a dare and slapped it and ran back.
Three things about the article that we talked about was the "Negro Law", Atticus' character in the book was based off of Harper Lee's father in reality, and lastly, Harper Lee wasn't able to write another book because she got into drugs and alcohol.

Two important things we talked about were the grey ghost and what that symbolized and the story of Boo Ridley. Three things we talked about in a glimpse into Harper Lee were if Atticus's parents were war heroes. Also wouldn't the negroe laws have been considered racist. Lastly we talked about was what ended up happening to Capote.
