Courage Paragraphs

}Courage in To Kill a Mockingbird
Based on your focus point notes (or the poster), explain (in paragraph form) one of the different types of courage that exist in the world (what we just brainstormed about with partners) and how it has been shown in TKAM.

You need specific quotes from the novel to use while proving your point.  This should be at least one longer paragraph or two shorter paragraphs in length.

I’d suggest the first paragraph (or first half of a longer one) should explain the type of courage in the world and the second should be that type in the book. This needs to be written in paragraph format! (TIQA!)

  1. Sacrificial/ risk taking courage is when you stand up for something when you know that you will be given a hard time for. You do this because you know that what you are fighting for is the right thing.

An example of this in To Kill A Mockingbird is when Atticus takes Tom Robinson's case. Atticus has to take the case anyway because it was assigned to him, but he chooses to really try to defend his client, and he cares about what happens to him. Atticus is faced with a few big obstacles when taking the case, such as ridicule, and angry mobs, but he does what he thinks is right, and defends Tom Robinson, knowing the risk he is taking.

  2. I am doing against the odds courage this kind is when someone goes up against something they know they may fail doing but focusing on the chance they may prevail victorious. In To Kill A Mocking Bird this is shown in Atticus defending Tom Robinson even though he was black. In this time period many people were still very upset about loosing slaves especially in the southern states. And this taking place in Alabama also means many people still supported the idea of slavery and Jim Crow laws even though it was outlawed. Atticus had everything going against him but he still gave it a shot.

  3. One of the types of courage shown in To Kill a Mockingbird is childish courage. Childish courage is when you do something without really knowing the consequences or the affects. You do something because it "seems fun" at the time. You're basically being impetuous, because you're not really thinking about your actions. Childish courage is shown multiple times throughout To Kill a Mockingbird. On page 18, Jem runs up to the Radley house and touches it. Now, this doesn't seem like such a bad thing, but considering there's a "squirrel eating monster who only comes out at night" in the house, takes a lot of child courage to do such an action. Also on page 204, Scout kicked one of the men in a group surrounding Atticus because he manhandled Jem. I think that took a lot of courage, especially considering she is only eight years old and is more than half their size.

  4. Self courage is a when a person is able to do things for themselves, and is capable of standing up for their beliefs. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout was having a conversation with Mr. Cunningham, "Entailment is bad," Scout goes on to explain to the readers that entailment was fine at the time, and was even seen as living room talk. But what Scout was getting to was her opinion on the subject. At the time that this book took place, it was less likely for a woman, let alone a child voice her opinion to a group of men. I think that she had a lot of courage to stand up and say this to these men, whom some she barely knew, and this shows that she is a character who is full of self courage.

  5. Moral Courage is doing the right thing even when it can endanger you or others. In To Kill a Mockingbird we see moral courage several times. One time is when Atticus went to the jail to protect Robinson. Atticus says, "I'm goin' downtown for a while." Event though he is lying to Jem and Scout he knows he is doing the right thing because he believes he is doing the right thing by protecting Robinson. Atticus also knows that he may get hurt and if he tells Jem and Scout whats going on they'll get hurt as well. Another time we see moral courage is when Dill creates the lie about strip poker and says, "Ah- I won em' from him" he believed that this was the right thing to say so that Jem wouldn't get to harshly yelled at even though it caused Dill to suffer slightly. These show how moral courage relates to, To Kill a Mockingbird.

  6. In To Kill a Mockingbird the type of courage I've seen is bravery. Jem and Dill do show this by running up and touching the Radley House, while the they do this it does show some stupid courage because come on, you wouldn't just run up to a house and touch it. Another part where it shows bravery is where Atticus is defending Tom Robinson. In 1930's Alabama that is really frowned upon, but it does show that Atticus has a lot of self-courage. It also shows heroic courage because he's not afraid of what will happen, minus the mob. Also it shows overcoming fear when Jem and Dill touch the house when Dill said" You're still scared." to Jem, he instinctively ran up and touched the house just to prove Dill wrong.

  7. the courage of overcoming fear for example when someone if afraid of getting in front of people and talking and you go and do it that is an example of overcoming fear. it is showed in the To Kill A Mockingbird when Jem goes and touches the house she is overcoming the fear of boo radley. it is also shown when they eat the gum that boo left them after kids said it would kill them they still did it.

  8. Moral Courage is the type of courage I have choosen to talk about. In the book TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Jem says, " Boo Radley. You were so buys looking at the fire you didn't know it when he pit the blanket around you." When Boo Radley did this it was a sign of moral courage which basically means to do the right thing no matter what and that's exactly what Boo Radley did that morning while Mrs.Rachel's house burnt down. Another sign of moral courage happened in chapter 10. Towards the beginning of chapter 10 Jem and Scout saw a mad dog so Capurnia called the sheriff and the sheriff brought Atticus with them. When the sheriff gave Atticus the gun to kill the dog so it was out of his missery. So when Atticus easily shot it he was simply doing a act of moral courage towards the mad dog. So basically moral courage is when you do an act of kindness or right doing towards someone or something no matter what, even if you don't know you are. So this is how moral courage fits into the book TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD.

  9. An example of courage that I think is shown in To Kill A Mockingbird is moral courage. This is shown when Atticus and Scout are having a conversation. Scout says, "Atticus do you defend niggers?" Atticus replied, "Of course I defend niggers." This is an example of moral courage because everybody at this time doesn't support African Americans but a couple of people. Atticus is one of those. He knows that it is the right thing to do and he is willing to do the right thing no matter the consequences. Later on in the book, Atticus says that he would have volunteered to defended Tom Robinson even if he was wasn't assigned to do it.

  10. Richard Clark Selfless courage
In chapter 15 scout sticks up for Jem when a strange man hits him or picks him up then scout kicks him bare footed and the man drops(haha by a little girl) I chose this one because the way Scout sticks up For jem is selfless or stupidly not thought about, but it goes to show that no matetr size or stature the littlest people can have a big impact, and the big ones they fall and make a big impact on the gound but Scout is showing that she actually cares about Jem and truly loves him as her brother.

  11. One type of courage that is found in the book and in the real world is doing the right thing, or moral courage. In the real world, people stand up for what they believe all the time and gethurt and killed for it all the time. In places where people are being discriminated against, others will stand up for them and fight for what they know is right.

In "To Kill a Mockingbird," Atticus stands up for Tom Robinson by defending him of being accused of rape. On page 100, Atticus says,"If I can't defend him, I can never hold my head up in town again. I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again." This shows that Atticus needs to do the right thing and he is prepared to stand up for what is right.

  12. Moral courage is doing what you know is right even if it scares you. Morals are the things you know are right or wrong. For instance, you know it is wrong to kill someone, or you know it is right to say please and thank you. Different people stay more or less true to their morals, and some people have different morals. Either way, sticking to your morals can at times take courage. Atticus knows it will be hard to defend Tom Robinson, and he is scared for his family, but we can see it is part of his morals when he says,"...if I didn't I couldn't hold up my own head in town..." He wouldn't expect anyone to listen to him anymore, and he wouldn't be able to live with himself. Although he is scared, he sticks to his morals, therefore showing moral courage.

  13. Sacrificing/Risk because Atticus defended Tom Robinson because he was assigned the case but he actually wanted to help Tom but he had many issues defending Tom such as people hating him and Angry mobs because everybody wanted Tom to be put in jail but Atticus was trying to get him off which made everybody angry.

  14. I will talk about stupid courage.

Stupid courage can be seen almost anywhere you look in the story, "To Kill a Mockingbird". We see Jem using stupid courage all the time, and the same can go for Scout. Jem and Dill believe it is their duty in life to mess with Boo Radley. In chapters 6, and 7, we see the kids going to the Radley house, trying to see if they can do anything to get him out. They see somebody's shadow, possibly Boo Radley's, and get scared out of their minds, and proceed to run away. Jem, Scout, and Dill are just being stupid messing with Boo Radley, who is likely crazy.

We can also see stupid courage out in the world. Whether it's jumping off a cliff into water, bungee jumping over crocodile waters, or fighting someone that you have a bone to pick with, it is usually a pretty dumb idea to do, and it will often end really badly. Save yourself, and don't be like these kids.

  15. Anger courage is seen in To Kill a Mockingbird not very much. When I think of Anger courage, I think of people acting out and doing stupid things that they will regret later on.It's mostly people taking their courage out on people that don't really deserve it. In the book Jem took his anger out on scout and Mrs. Dubose's flower garden. In the book scout said "he did not begin to calm down until he cut the tops off of every camellia bush,"(page 137) that just means that Jem really doesn't know how to control his anger and he takes his anger out on everybody and everything around him.

  16. Bravery courage. Scout standing up for Jem when a man picked him up off the ground and she kicked him. Bravery courage is being brave and having courage. Jem standing up for Scout when Mrs. Dubose was being rude and scaring Scout. Jem being brave by ignoring people talking about his father and the trial. Atticus defending black people even with all the hateful words said towards him. Calpurnia taking Jem and Scout to her church with her. Dill running away from a possible abusive home. Jem going back to Boo Radley’s to get his pants back. Nathan Radley going inside Miss Maudie’s house when it was on fire. Boo Radley coming outside during the house fire to put a blanket around Scout. Jem and Scout going to Mrs. Dubose house to read to her for a month. Mrs. Dubose trying to get over her morphine addiction.

  17. One of the many types of courage shown is going against the odds. This is the type of courage people get when they know that something bad can happen in the end but they do it anyway because they think it is the right thing to do. This is showed in the book when Scout runs to Atticus in town she starts to talk to Mr.Cunningham about his son. This shows going against the odds because she doesn't care if Atticus punishes her she just wants to help. Another way this courage is shown is when Atticus accepts to defend Tom Robinson. The courage shows because Atticus knew that this could change his and his families lives if he chose to accept. Also it shows that Atticus didn't care about the outcomes as long as he was sure that he could try and help Tom.

  18. Doing the right thing is a type of courage we see a lot in this world. We may not always want to do something, but we sometimes have to have courage and do it anyway because it is the right thing to do. Atticus has courage in TKAM. He had to do the right thing by taking the Tom Robinson case even though he didn't want to. Jem said, "It's this Tom Robinson case that's worryin' him to death-" (pg 184). The case worried Atticus and caused him a lot of stress. Atticus didn't want to take the case, but he did because it was the right thing to do.

  19. Childish courage is seen in many ways in our world today. It has made some great memories and sometimes left us thinking, “What was I thinking?” Whether it be staying in a spooky house overnight because of a lost bet, or doing some other dumb stuff, childish courage is very present in the world today and in To Kill a Mockingbird.
An example of childish courage in To Kill a Mockingbird would be when Jem ran up and touched the Radley house. “You went up and touched the house,” Scout said after Jem yelled at her for taking the gum out of the tree and eating it. Going up and touching the house where a possible monster lived, and at a relatively young age, must have taken a lot of courage.

  20. My will be honesty, In the story to kill a mocking bird, Jem becomes very honest to scout, He will tell her were he goes and other things. Dill is the perfect opposite example he usually never tells the truth. It take courage to be honest during the chapter when Jem tells scout that he was going to retrieve his pants.

  21. In To Kill a Mockingbird there are many examples of childish courage.
After hiding in front of Tyndal’s hardware store with Jem and Dill, Scout broke away from them and ran as fast as she could to Atticus. After pushing her way through the crowd she saw Atticus “ A flash of plain fear was going out of his eyes,m but returned when Dill and Jem wriggled into the light.” On pg. 203 This is showing how Scout’s childish courage and how it affected Atticus.

  22. Courage- The ability to do something that frightens one. Scout was courage's in chapter 11 when Jem and her had to walk past Mrs. Dobores house to school. They could of walked the mile out of the way to get there. She says previous minor encounters with her left me with no desire for more, but Jem said i had to grow up sometime. Jem and scout hated Mrs. Dobores she would always tell them how they wouldn't amount to anything, they cant do anything to please her but continued to try. They would say "Hey, Mrs. Dobores." she would reply back"don't you say hey to me you ugly girl.""You say good afternoon,Mrs. Dobores." They gained courage by continuing to walk by and talk to her. and once Mrs. Dobores heard Jem refer to their father is aticus her reaction was apologetic. their courage had paid off by not letting her get their goat.
