Words of Wisdom for today

}Pick a quote from the words of wisdom poster or your annotations (or find a good one you haven’t written down yet).  As a comment to this post, explain why that quote is important to people today/the “real world.” You should have a paragraph at least to explain what the words of wisdom mean and why it is important for people today. You could possibly connect it to your real world connection from Tuesday as well.

  1. One quote that applies to the real world talks about saying sorry when you aren't. Atticus tells Jem, "There was no point in saying you were sorry if you aren't." This quote applies to us today because lots of people say sorry just because they have to but they don't actually mean it. We should try to apologize and mean it because it can mean more to the person accepting the apology and it can make you feel better as well.

  2. "Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin but you see it through no matter what" (Lee 149). I feel that this is a quote that we should all know today, because everyone will have to be courageous at some point in their lives. This is a very accurate description of courage, because it shows that those that are courageous, kind of have to know that they are being courageous when they do something, and that they have to tough it out no matter what.

  3. A piece if wisdom from TKAM that i feel people needs comes from when Atticus says, " There's no point in saying sorry if you don't mean it."
people nowa days say sorry because they are told to by their mom/dad, and you can actually tell when they are saying a real sorry they look like he or she may almost be in tears or look like it. It may be useful in ways like seeing if they are your best bud(s) or your "friend" that just says it to say it and not actually mean it.

  4. My quote is "There is no point in saying sorry if you are not" (Lee 140). I think this is a good one because this is a huge problem in today's society whether its with our siblings or just telling little white lies. I realize we are not perfect people but we can always be a little more truthful and kind.

  5. My wisdom quote that I feel works in modern times was spoken by Miss Maudie. Miss Maudie tells Scout," Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up peoples gardens, don't nest in corncribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out to us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (Lee, pg.119.) That quote shows that in life, there are people and things that are good and do good things, but other people try to stop them and that is a sin. IT would make no sense to kill or hurt something that is perfectly good and is doing nothing wrong.

  6. "That proves something- that a gang of wild animals can be stopped, simply because they're still human" (Lee 210). I feel that this quote really applies to society today. There is a lot of hate in this world and not enough love. We're all human, love comes more natural to us than hate. We have to be taught how to hate, we don't have to be taught how to love. Anything can be overcome by peace and love, for love conquers hate.

  7. One quote that can be applied today is when Atticus is talking to Scout about the name people are calling him for taking Tom Robinson's case. He says,"...it's never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn't hurt you." (Lee 144) Atticus is trying to tell Scout not to take it harshly. Them using the word as a bad name shows more about themselves than it does the person they directed it towards. If people realized that the words they use show more about themselves, I think they would watch what they said more often. If people applied what Atticus said, they would also be a lot less offended by what people said about them, therefore causing less problems. They names people use tell more about themselves than anyone else.

  8. In To Kill A Mockingbird, there are many words of wisdom, though I have found one that has stuck out that can connect to today's society. After Scout was in a fight, Atticus told her "Try fighting with your head for a change... it's a good one, even if it does resist learning" (Lee 101) This relates to today's society by showing that we should all grow up, and learn to move past things. Specifically, we should think about what the situation is, before we act on it, like Scout started a fist fight. This can lead to less violence and helping people understand the problem, and find better ways of correcting the issue, without anyone getting hurt.

  9. A piece of wisdom from the book I feel like people should know is, Atticus says,"I wanted you to see what real courage is. Instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand." I think this connects with the real world because people think it takes courage to basically walk around with a gun and shoot at people. It kinda does but its really just wondering what will happen next. The kind of courage Atticus is talking about is standing up for yourself and helping someone lower than you. When Atticus is defending Tom, Tom had the courage to help Mayella even though he was black and she was white it took a lot of guts for him to help her.

  10. Some words of wisdom from "To Kill a Mockingbird" is when Atticus is talking to Scout about trying to get along with other people, he says, "First of all if you learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you crawl into his skin and walk around in it," (Lee 39). You may think negatively about a person or wonder why they act in such a way, but until you walk in their shoes you won't really understand why they do what they do.

  11. A quote that has to do with people today in To Kill a Mockingbird, is when Atticus is talking to scout about putting herself into somebody else shoes,"Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it," he just means that he doesn't want scout judging people before getting to know them and know where they came from.I feel like a lot of people in the world need this because we tend to judge people based on how they look and how they act, and what they wear. We don't know where they came from or how they are raised.

  12. a piece of wisdom from the book that would help people now days.comes from atticus
atticus tells jem that there's no point in saying sorry if u dont mean it
i think this is important because it's a good point there wouldn't really be reason to say sorry if you dont mean it.in the real world you would use this if you do something that hurt some one you would say sourry. but if you dont mean it you wont say soury. un less someone makes you and even then you don't mean it you're just saying it to get whoever it is off your back. that's why i think this is a good piece of wisdom from this book.

  13. Many people can learn some things from "To Kill A Mockingbird". Ms Maudie says,"Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncribs. They don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." (Lee Pg. 119) Something that people can learn from this quote, is to not do anything that isn't necessary that may hurt someone else. In the book, we see Jem destroy Ms. Dubose's flowers, and it really hurt her, but it ended up circling back around and hurting him. That could also happen to people today, so don't be a jerk.

  14. A piece of wisdom from To Kill a Mockingbird is when Atticus says to Scout "Try fighting with your head for a change" (Lee 101). Its important because he is telling Scout that she should fight herself instead of everybody else.

  15. A word of wisdom from To Kill a Mockingbird that people should understand is when Atticus tells Jem, "“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what."(Lee,149) It is a good thing to learn because it shows us that there is real courage and the courage when people aren't afraid because they know they have a weapon to use if all else fails.Mrs.Dubose fought all on her own to die without painkillers, very brave of her to suffer like that. That is real courage, one where you have no weapon but yourself.

  16. This is the words of wisdom quote I have choosen. The words of wisdom quote comes from Atticus, " If you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view" (Lee 39). This quote means that don't judge people for what they say or do without knowing the reasoning behind it. So by that you should think of what is causing them to do what they are doing before you put your point of view ahead of theirs. This quote is needed in the world because if people knew this and followed by it people will understand eachother more and they will understand what is causing them to do it. This will also help people with depression because if people look from their point of view they will understand what they are going trough and then they will be able to stop them from crying, suicide, drinking, and doing drugs. This will save millons of lives a year if people do what this quote says. So this is how this quote will help america and humans for the better good.

  17. My wisdom quote came from Atticus, “Try fighting with your head for a change.” (Lee pg 101) This quote is important because anyone can fight with their words but it takes a real man to fight with words. Fighting with fists may show how strong you are but you look more mature and smarter when use your words. People need to use their words more because if we weren’t fighting all the time we could get somewhere. Words are more powerful than fists.

  18. A wisdom quote from To Kill A Mockingbird that i feel is important today is "you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." (Lee,39). i feel that quote is important today because so many people are judged for looking funny or acting weird. also some one might look dirty but until we are in their shoes we don't know what they are going through in their life.

  19. A piece of wisdom from To Kill A Mockingbird that I feel people today need comes from Atticus. Atticus says, “First of all,” he said, :if you can learn a simple trick, Scout you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Lee 39). People need to know how to do this because this is how you become friends with somebody in the real world. To become friends with somebody you have to look at life through his/her eyes and walk in their shoes. You also need to know how to do this to understand people’s actions that they commit in the world.

  20. In To Kill a Mockingbird has wisdom that many people could use today. Atticus tells scout, "try fighting with your head for a change"(Lee 101). This quote is important to people today because most people just use physical harming instead of using their words. Most people don't think of ways they can solve these problems they just blame one person. They don't care who did it they just want to get revenge. This is useful today because we don't have to harm people to get the actual answer you just have to use your head. You have to use your head to think of ways you can solve a problem without hurting anyone around you.

  21. I Quote from tom in page 261 "Mr. Finch, if you was a nigger like me you'd be scared, too". It talks about the raciest society that Americans live in during the 1930's, it talks also on how unfair the justice system was towards colored people. To day the anti color people has turned a round to be anti white society in which kids dream to be black.
